An Emily Readalong

Two years ago I participated in the Green Gables Readalong. We read one Anne book a month starting in January and ending in August. Ever since then, I have wanted to do the same with Emily. It’s been at least 20 years since I read about her.

I was originally going to start this month, but I’m getting a bit of a late start back to the blog after the Holidays. And I’m still working on The Blythes are Quoted (which is delightful). So, I think I’ll start in February with Emily of New Moon, then Emily Climbs in March, and end with Emily’s Quest in April.

I would love to have company, if anyone wants to join in! No sign-ups, no links, no pressure. Just fun. And if anyone wants to suggest a good hashtag for Twitter, feel free! (#ReadEmily? #Em-along?) Let me know in the comments if you’re interested, so I can keep track of you more easily!

Update: Hashtag we’re going with is #ReadingEmily

Beyond Cool!! I’m gonna try to read along with you & ‘Emily’ as it’s been years for me too. I’m going to forward this to my mom who originally introduced me to L.M. Montgomery’s world when I was a child. You inspire Naomi! K

    • Naomi says:

LM Montgomery wrote the Emily series after writing most of the Anne books. The Emily books were published in 1925 – 1929. They are considered to be a little darker than the Anne series, as well as more autobiographical.

  2. Rebecca Foster says:

I read the Emily books in my early teen years as soon as I finished all the Anne books and found them so dark in comparison. I wonder what I’d make of them as an adult. I think they are true to LMM’s experience of depression (I don’t know much about her life)?

    • Naomi says:

They *are* said to be darker, and more autobiographical. Because it’s been so long since I read them, I can’t tell you much more than that off the top of my head. But I’m hoping this re-read of them will be more insightful than my last!

I’ve never read these books, but I am not sure I’ll have the time to read along, especially since I have Kid #1 almost talked into reading all the Anne books with me. I am curious to find out more about Emily, though, so of course I’ll be following your reviews.

    • Naomi says:

If you have Kid #1 talked into reading Anne, you better take the chance while you can! And, if it works out, I’d love to hear how it’s going!

What a lovely idea! I’ve just finished Emily Climbs today, so I don’t think I am ready to read them again so soon, but I shall enjoy reading about your readalong.

I hope to try this. I read Anne, Emily, Pat and Marigold but my girl is Jane. My little guy used his money and bought me a copy to replace the copy I lost years ago. So Jane is on my list this year too!

    • Naomi says:

It would be wonderful to have you join us!
I would love to re-read Jane sometime soon. It’s been too long for all of them (except for the Anne books which I re-read 2 years ago). I’m hoping to eventually get to them all!
What a sweet thing for your little guy to do. 🙂

Unlike most readers I read the Emily books when I was very young, 8 for the first book, and 9 for the other two. They were my mom’s books when she was a kid, and I loved them very much. I also was determined to be a writer, and in a modest way, this has been a reality. I read the Anne books as an adult, most of them during the read-along project of a few years ago. For me, Anne grew less interesting as she grew older.

    • Naomi says:

I think many readers feel less interested in Anne as she grew older. Thinking about it, I probably grew less interested in Anne, but not necessarily less interested in the books about her. There are so many other things I enjoyed about the books.
And I think Emily is definitely more inspiring to young writers!

Love this idea, and it has been a few years now since I have read Emily. And a few years since I’ve done any book blogging. I’m in, and sharing with my book club.

This is a good question for everyone… The conversation starts whenever any of you are ready to start it – on your blogs or on Twitter at #ReadingEmily. Feel free to visit any of the blogs you see here, or comment/discuss on Twitter. If you have posted about Emily on your own blog, share it on Twitter with #ReadingEmily, or link to this post, and I will make every effort to visit and share!
      Thanks for your question!

My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw the hastag on Twitter! This looks like so much fun! I love Emily of New Moon. Is there a schedule for the read-along or is it that we post/tweet as we independently read it?

  9. A.M.B. says:

Ha, I just re-read your post. In my excitement, I totally missed that you answered all of my questions. Thanks for organizing this. I’m looking forward to starting Emily of New Moon.

  10. Melwyk says:

Oh, yes, it might be time for an Emily reread! Haven’t read this trilogy in quite a few years now. My last thorough reread was the Anne series a few years back, and the Pat books last year. I’ll try to read along with you.
