Two years ago I participated in the Green Gables Readalong. We read one Anne book a month starting in January and ending in August. Ever since then, I have wanted to do the same with Emily. It’s been at least 20 years since I read about her.
I was originally going to start this month, but I’m getting a bit of a late start back to the blog after the Holidays. And I’m still working on The Blythes are Quoted (which is delightful). So, I think I’ll start in February with Emily of New Moon, then Emily Climbs in March, and end with Emily’s Quest in April.
I would love to have company, if anyone wants to join in! No sign-ups, no links, no pressure. Just fun. And if anyone wants to suggest a good hashtag for Twitter, feel free! (#ReadEmily? #Em-along?) Let me know in the comments if you’re interested, so I can keep track of you more easily!
Update: Hashtag we’re going with is #ReadingEmily
That is an awesome idea!! I have 2 more to finish in the Anne series before I move to Emily but I will watch for your reviews for sure!
Good to hear! You might even be able to catch up. 🙂
Beyond Cool!! I’m gonna try to read along with you & ‘Emily’ as it’s been years for me too. I’m going to forward this to my mom who originally introduced me to L.M. Montgomery’s world when I was a child. You inspire Naomi! K
I’m so happy to hear that you’re interested, Kelly! 🙂
What lovely covers, I’ve never heard of the Emily books!
LM Montgomery wrote the Emily series after writing most of the Anne books. The Emily books were published in 1925 – 1929. They are considered to be a little darker than the Anne series, as well as more autobiographical.
I love this idea! I grew up with the Anne books but I only heard of Emily a few years ago. I have the whole trilogy now, so I’d love to join you.
Wonderful, Jane! And lovely to have someone new to the books. 🙂
I’m keen! I re-read the Emily series a year or so ago and wrote about my thoughts on the eerie final novel here (https://drlauratisdall.wordpress.com/2015/06/05/laura-rereading-i-belong-to-him/) but I’m always up for discussing Emily.
Great! Glad yo have you join us, Laura!
PS What a shame that in those otherwise gorgeous versions Emily has been shoved out of her own final cover by Teddy!
You’re right – he seems to have taken the lead there, hasn’t he?
I’ll read with you!
Yay!
I read the Emily books in my early teen years as soon as I finished all the Anne books and found them so dark in comparison. I wonder what I’d make of them as an adult. I think they are true to LMM’s experience of depression (I don’t know much about her life)?
They *are* said to be darker, and more autobiographical. Because it’s been so long since I read them, I can’t tell you much more than that off the top of my head. But I’m hoping this re-read of them will be more insightful than my last!
Oh, what a wonderful idea! I got ahead of you and re-read the trilogy last year. I don’t know if I’ll be able to read it again, but hopefully my memories will be fresh enough to enjoy and perhaps join in the discussions.
Oh, yes, please do join in for the discussions!
Naomi! I’ve NEVER read the Emily books! I would love to finally read these so count me in!
Awesome! And, how did I not know that you’ve never read them?!
Count me in! I’ve been wanting to read Emily forever. I love the book covers too.
Yay! So happy you’re joining!
Oo, yes, I want to do this!! I like #ReadEmily and I would totally be up for a readalong — the Emily books are where my heart has always been at, and I reread them all at least once a year.
Once a year! I think you qualify as our expert! 🙂
I’ve never read these books, but I am not sure I’ll have the time to read along, especially since I have Kid #1 almost talked into reading all the Anne books with me. I am curious to find out more about Emily, though, so of course I’ll be following your reviews.
If you have Kid #1 talked into reading Anne, you better take the chance while you can! And, if it works out, I’d love to hear how it’s going!
Oh, gosh, I never even heard of Emily. I haven’t done very well at reading more Anne, and now there’s another whole series.
Well, you can follow along and see what you think before deciding to dive in!
Oh, how fun!! These books sound lovely, though I am not familiar with them. 😦 #ReadEmily sounds like a good hashtag. Have fun, everyone!
We will! 🙂
What a lovely idea! I’ve just finished Emily Climbs today, so I don’t think I am ready to read them again so soon, but I shall enjoy reading about your readalong.
We’d be happy to have you join in the discussions!
Great plan Naomi. Even though the Emily books are on my TBR I don’t think I can squeeze them in this year. I hope you enjoy the reads
If you change you’re mind, jump in at any time!
What a great idea, Naomi! Provided I get back in the swing of blogging, etc., by February, per the plan (in my head, at least), I’ll participate! 🙂
Sounds good, Lynn! 🙂
I hope to try this. I read Anne, Emily, Pat and Marigold but my girl is Jane. My little guy used his money and bought me a copy to replace the copy I lost years ago. So Jane is on my list this year too!
It would be wonderful to have you join us!
I would love to re-read Jane sometime soon. It’s been too long for all of them (except for the Anne books which I re-read 2 years ago). I’m hoping to eventually get to them all!
What a sweet thing for your little guy to do. 🙂
Unlike most readers I read the Emily books when I was very young, 8 for the first book, and 9 for the other two. They were my mom’s books when she was a kid, and I loved them very much. I also was determined to be a writer, and in a modest way, this has been a reality. I read the Anne books as an adult, most of them during the read-along project of a few years ago. For me, Anne grew less interesting as she grew older.
I think many readers feel less interested in Anne as she grew older. Thinking about it, I probably grew less interested in Anne, but not necessarily less interested in the books about her. There are so many other things I enjoyed about the books.
And I think Emily is definitely more inspiring to young writers!
Love this idea, and it has been a few years now since I have read Emily. And a few years since I’ve done any book blogging. I’m in, and sharing with my book club.
Glad to hear it! Great to have you aboard!
Count me in as a first time reader of these Emily novels!
Great! Welcome aboard! 🙂
When will the conversation begin? And where?
This is a good question for everyone… The conversation starts whenever any of you are ready to start it – on your blogs or on Twitter at #ReadingEmily. Feel free to visit any of the blogs you see here, or comment/discuss on Twitter. If you have posted about Emily on your own blog, share it on Twitter with #ReadingEmily, or link to this post, and I will make every effort to visit and share!
Thanks for your question!
Ah, I just read your response here (which basically answers my question). Thanks!
My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw the hastag on Twitter! This looks like so much fun! I love Emily of New Moon. Is there a schedule for the read-along or is it that we post/tweet as we independently read it?
I’m happy to have reeled you in! 🙂
Ha, I just re-read your post. In my excitement, I totally missed that you answered all of my questions. Thanks for organizing this. I’m looking forward to starting Emily of New Moon.
Looking forward to having you aboard!
Oh, yes, it might be time for an Emily reread! Haven’t read this trilogy in quite a few years now. My last thorough reread was the Anne series a few years back, and the Pat books last year. I’ll try to read along with you.
Wonderful to have you join us!
I haven’t read Pat in a long time…
I’m “in”! When do we start?!
Any time you like! Anything you have to say can be linked to this post, or shared on Twitter at #Reading Emily!
I’ve read the whole trilogy but it’s been a LONG time! I’m in!
Yay!
I am going to join you.
Happy to hear it!
I’m not on Twitter, but I wanted to share my post with you.

Thank you! I’m off to read it, then I’ll add it to the bottom of my own post about Emily of New Moon, which is here: https://consumedbyink.ca/2017/02/12/emily-readalong-emily-of-new-moon/?wref=tp
Thanks 🙂
